What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Special Materials Machinist 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Sigma Division is looking for a highly motivated machinist to work with existing staff to support component manufacturing in Sigma. The successful applicant will join the Sigma staff to perform manufacturing operations, primarily machining, on a wide range of materials, including some unique special materials with specific hazards (radiation, toxicity, etc.), to produce high quality components and subassemblies in support of production/experimental programs as well as special projects.

Special Materials Machinist 4 ($77,300 - $126,000)
The successful candidate will:
Perform precision measurements using hand tools to ensure quality requirements are met
Use of hand tools and supporting shop equipment with no supervision
Setup and operate manual equipment (lathes, mills, grinders, etc.) with no supervision
Setup and operate CNC equipment (lathes, mills, EDMs, waterjets, etc.) with no supervision
Create CAD/CAM files (such as Camworks, MasterCam, etc.) and G&M code
Manufacture complex parts made from difficult materials with exacting tolerances, from drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions
Performing machining of materials in gloveboxes on small CNC machines
Review designs and advise on part manufacturability, cost, and schedule
Documentation of work performed. Reporting of results to supervisor or customers orally or in writing
Training and mentoring of others
Use of classified computing for programming of machine tools
Operation of crane and forklifts

Special Materials Machinist 5 ($85,400 - $139,600)
In addition to what was outlined above, the Special Materials Machinist 5 will :
Advise on methods and processes
Develop new principles, techniques, or manufacturing methods (SME for process and/or equipment)
Support installation, testing, and operation of new equipment as well as support removal of legacy equipment
Independently check part requirements related to product quality
Planning "next stages" of technical work and presenting viable alternatives

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applied shop mathematics

  • Comprehensive understanding of machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applied material properties

  • Comprehensive knowledge and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

  • Expert ability performing precision measurements

  • Expert ability to use hand tools and supporting shop equipment

  • Expert ability to setup operate manual equipment

  • Expert ability to setup and operate CNC equipment

  • Expert ability to create CAD/CAM files or G&M code

  • Expert ability to manufacture complex parts made from difficult materials with exacting tolerances

  • Experience with 5-axis CNC machining

  • Ability to read and understand new procedures and protocols toward long-range goals

  • Ability to review designs and advise on part manufacturability, cost and schedule

  • Ability to train and mentor others

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 6 years of experience; OR 8 years prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 6 years of experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 10 years of experience; OR 12 years prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 10 years of experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in machining hazardous materials and handling classified matter

  • Crane and forklift operator

Sigma Division focuses on materials science and engineering, emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
